Webinar on Marketing Proceeds (e.g. compost, RDF) from Waste

The Solid Waste Management rules 2016, spell out the importance of setting up of compost plants and the channeling of vegetable, fruit, flower, meat, poultry, and fish to such plants to promote composting. The rules also capture the need to phase out the use of chemical fertilizer in two years and use compost in all parks, gardens maintained by the local body and wherever possible in other places under its jurisdiction.

While it is important for the creation of an environment suitable for compost production, it is equally important to reflect upon promoting and marketing of compost within potential markets. The rules pave the way to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, to provide market development assistance on city compost and ensure the promotion of co-marketing of compost with chemical fertilizers. Further, the government has also announced a subsidy on sale of fertilizer at Rs. 1500/ton of compost. Yet the compost manufacturing facilities feel the heat when it comes to enhancing the sales of compost due to various other factors.
